Antibes

Antibes - Description

Claude Monet's depictions of water have made him famous. His paintings of lilies in water, boats in the distance, and buildings reflected in water splashed by sunsets are some of the world's most beloved paintings. As an Impressionist painter, water had a special appeal for Monet. Impressionists believed that time passes so fleetingly, that a painting can truly capture a singular moment in time, and only if the painter works quickly. In "Antibes," we see these theories put to stunning use. Nearly half of the painting depicts the a relatively calm sea. Rapid, deep strokes of blue and green paint are placed side by side, giving the impression of movement and undulating waves. The strokes are mainly horizontal. The middle of the painting shows pink and blue mountains rising on the opposite shore. The sky above is a cloudless blue, painted in nearly vertical strokes. In the center of "Antibes," a crooked, gnarled tree reaches to the sky. The top of the tree is not visible. The diagonal movement of the tree contrasts beautifully with the horizontal water, horizontal line of the shore and vertical strokes that make up the sky. The branches near the top of the tree are flecked with red, a color that reappears in the shore closest to the viewer. "Antibes" is a capture of a sunny, calm afternoon painted by an Impressionist master at the height of his powers.
