Artist's Garden at Argenteuil - Description

Argenteuil lies on the banks of the Seine. In 1871, it was an extremely popular destination for Sunday outings by Parisians. Monet's stay here would mark his most productive time as a painter, where he would paint some of his most beloved works. However, this was a time of poverty for the artist, as he had not yet achieved the wide fame and wealth that would come to him in later years. In "The Artist's Garden at Argenteuil," We are shown Monet's modest cottage rising from the back of the painting. A small fence encircles the cottage, and two figures are seen opening the gate: one dressed in black and one in white. The majority of the left side of the canvas of "The Artist's Garden at Argenteuil" is taken up with a bright tangle of flowering hedges. Reds, pinks and yellows pop from the background of dark, green leaves. Some red petals cascade down the front of the hedge, onto the ground below. The hedges lean forward toward the figures. This movement is echoed by a tree in the right of the image, which also bows down to the figures. Brush strokes throughout "The Artist's Garden at Argenteuil" are in true Impressionist style, done quickly and lightly, giving the painting a feeling of freedom, of time passing, of a single moment perfectly captured.
