Bridge at Argenteuil - Description

"The Bridge at Argenteuil," painted by Claude Monet in 1874, shows the artist at the height of his powers, bringing all of the tools in the Impressionist toolkit to bear in one beautiful scene. Nearly half of the painting is taken up with a brilliant blue sky. Brushstrokes are clearly visible here, and move in all directions. The sky is dotted with bright, puffy clouds rendered in circular strokes of white. To the right of the canvas, a bridge is shown, with arches receding into the distance. The use pf perspective is absolutely perfect here, as the arches get smaller as they recede from the viewer. Two figures are seen on the top of the bridge, rendered very quickly and without detail. The may possibly be looking at the boats on the river, all of which are much too large to pass underneath the bridge. The center of the canvas contains a black boat with sails lowered. Its masts extend to the top and edges, in bright stripes of yellow. The masts and the black hull are reflected in the water below. One more mast bisects the canvas nearly in half, while the rest of the boat remains unseen. At the left of the canvas, a sailboat moves to the bridge, with the human sailor clearly seen. "The Bridge at Argenteuil" is a busy painting, with many points of reference and much to see, all executed with skill in an Impressionistic style.
