Chrysanthemums - Description

Claude Monet loved flowers. He is widely quoted as saying, " I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers," (source: http://thinkexist.com/quotes/claude_monet). Flowers were a natural choice for an Impressionist painter. They provide a natural study in color, in contrast and in line. Monet painted chrysanthemums multiple times during his lifetime. The painter was an avid gardener, and had many varieties of the flower in his yard. In this painting of " Chrysanthemums," multiple varieties of the flowers are on display, exploding in bright bursts of color. Monet painted very quickly, not blending his colors before applying them but allowing the colors to blend within the eye of the viewer. The red flowers in the center of " Chrysanthemums," provide the best example of this technique: red, orange and pink all compete to provide a full example of a flower in bloom. White flowers in the lower left are painted quickly and breezily, appearing to shift and blow. Pink and lavender flowers contrast with the yellow and red flowers that dominate the canvas. The background of the image is rendered in blue and green, providing a deep carpet for the flowers to rise from. " Chrysanthemums," is a bright, cheerful and clean example of Monet's love of gardening and flowers.
