Colored Fairs

Colored Fairs - Description

Colored Fairs was completed by Austrian Symbolist painter Gustav Klimt in the year 1912. The painting depicts a lakeside landscape and six people milling about in the yellow grass. Klimt offers an interesting perspective here, lowering the fore and middle grounds to place the emphasis on the village seated on the hills overlooking the lake. This creates a top heavy effect on the canvas and keeps the eye purposely focused on the scattered houses beyond the horizon. The colors do not clash in Colored Fairs but instead compliment each other. Notice how Klimts tones of yellow in the hills bounce dramatically off of the complimentary blue and heighten the effect of the field in the foreground. The people in the field, however, are painted with a darker overtone and bear shades of a slightly earthy green in their clothing. Klimt, a Symbolist, might have done this with the intention of keeping his subjects apart from the slightly un natural blue dominating this piece and closer to the natural color one would be more easily apt to find in nature. The effect is that the landscape around the people appears brighter and more magical than the one found in ordinary life. The painting serves as an escape for the viewer, a composition filled with tremendous color guaranteed to lift one away from the tiredness of daily routine.
