Fruits of the Earth - Description

Frida Kahlo painted the still life Fruits of the Earth in the year 1938. An oil painting on Masonite, the image portrays a plate of dark colored fruit sitting on a wooden table in front of a grey sky. This painting is a juxtaposition of dark, earthy colors and vibrant hues of red and white. Its beauty lies in its simplicity and mastery of form. Fruits of the Earth is a nice break in terms of subject from Kahlo’s large bulk of portraits and depictions of inner turmoil. Here she reminds us of the plentiful fruit that this planet has to offer, spread out on one platter to be studied. The truly fantastic element of this nourishing composition is the angle at which Kahlo places the platter of fruit. The platter rests at an angle that places the viewer in the position of the eater, hovering over as if ready to dig into the feast below. For this reason the table extends into the middle ground, reducing the background to a mere window and placing emphasis on the plate at the center. It cannot be avoided, nor should it because besides being the visual focal point it raises the Fruit of the Earth to a new level of celebrated worthiness deserving of deliberation and entreating the prospect that one might gaze upon it with as much reverence as the artist did while painting it.
