Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre in the Garden - Description

striving for a sort of realism, an exploration of color and light and dark, and painting outside allowed this exploration more than still-life studio work would allow. In "Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre in the Garden," the scene is brightly lit by the sun, coming from the left of the canvas. All figures are in high relief, casting shadows. The center of the painting is taken up by a blooming tree, reaching half-way up the canvas. The white of the blossoms is taken up by the woman in the white dress with a white parasol. Her upright, rounded top silhouette contrasts beautifully with the tree. The same white dots the grass below, reaching toward the vibrant, red of the flowers beneath the white tree. The left of the canvas is filled with dark trees, extending off the edge of the frame. A shorter, brighter row of trees appears in front of that deep, shadowy line. The model for "Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre in the Garden" was the wife of Monet's cousin; the couple owned the gardens shown here. Monet would paint these gardens many times during a summer visit of 1867, but " Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre in the Garden" remains a favorite of modern viewers, who respect its serene feeling, and enjoy the period costume the model wears.
