Rock Arch West of Etretat - Description

Painting the sea in its full glory has always been a challenge. Capturing the changes in color, the movement of the waves and the transparency of the water when it hits the shore is an incredibly difficult task, but one that Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet are uniquely capable of tackling. Impressionist painters believed in painting quickly, in capturing those fleeting moments as best as possible, and allowing emotion and feeling to dominate over photographic realism. In "Rock Arch, West of Etretat," Monet puts these techniques to wonderful use. The sea comes in from the right of the image, in strokes of blue and green, and boils up over the rocks in circular strokes of white and yellow. A wave breaks on the arch itself, coiling into a tower of white circles. Two small figures stand on the top of a green rock, seemingly unconcerned with the water coming toward them. Over this scene stands the giant rock arch. The bottom of the arch is caught by the sun and glows in yellows and tans while the outer edges are in shadow in green and grey. The top of the arch extends off the canvas and is not visible to us. The left of the image is completely in shadow, with blues and blacks dominating. "Rock Arch, West of Etretat" is a masterful look at the sea in all its power and beauty.
