San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk - Description

“San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk” was made famous in the movie The Thomas Crown Affair. The Pierce Brosnan character steals this painting, breaks it in half, stuffs it in a suitcase, and brings it home intact. Thankfully, a recreation was used for the shooting of the scene, and the original painting remained intact and safely within the museum. Monet painted “San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk” in November of 1908, during a time when he and his wife were taking daily gondola trips to enjoy the sunsets. The colors of the brilliant sunset were put to good effect here. The painting is bisected by a stripe of red and burgundy of the setting sun. This color lightens to a brilliant orange, shown in the sky and reflected in the water below. This again modulates to yellow, and finally terminating in the blue of the sky and the deep blue of the water. The painting is executed in true Impressionist style, with rapid brushstrokes and little to no outlining. The sky is shown in circular brushstrokes, while the water is shown in horizontal strokes. The spire of the building on the left of the canvas reaches to the sky above, and is reflected in the water, reaching to the viewer. “San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk” is a bright, colorful work in a reflective tone, a perfect choice for a dramatic movie theft.
