The Golden Hour

The Golden Hour - Description

Noticeably dark in contrast, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s 1897 oil painting Golden Hour transmits a feeling of lavish excess and splendor so commonly found in most of his works. The painting depicts a woman fawning over a golden object, embracing its delectable beauty as if the statue were a lover. She seems entranced the masterfully painted statue, highlighted in the middle ground of the painting. Most striking about this piece is the realism employed to the hands and face. Her hair, commonly painted in red sits atop rosy skin and white dress. It is unclear of her location though the background suggests that she is indoors due to the depiction of windows. This piece is not governed by the use of heavy or set lines but rather an excellent display of color and form. Tones of silver and gold seem to jump off of the canvas and mingle placidly with the rosiness of the woman’s complex. This is a work that speaks volumes about the extreme decadence of antiquity and most likely works as a social commentary of the artist’s own Victorian era indirectly. Almost all of the pieces painted by Alma-Tadema are touched with dramatic displays of color and richness. His subjects, always well dressed and reminiscent of the artist’s social aristocracy with which he mingled, more often than not appear dazed in their hedonistic atmosphere.
