The Japanese Bridge - Description

Claude Monet was a master of landscape painting. He once said, "For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life - the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value,” (source: http://thinkexist.com/quotation/for_me-a_landscape_does_not_exist_in_its_own/343719.html). As an Impressionist painter, Monet was very concerned with painting an object at a particular moment, capturing a particular time and place on canvas and preserving it. In "The Japanese Bridge," Monet puts these theories to work. The base of the painting depicts a river flowing toward the viewer, with a cap of water lilies. The back end of the painting is covered with trees of various shapes and sizes. Dark greens and blacks contrast with brighter greens and yellows. These colors are reflected and refracted in the lilies and the shrubs below. The beautiful bridge spans the painting completely. The underside of the bridge is turquoise, perhaps reflecting the water below. No human figures are seen in this landscape, and Monet's signature flowers are also absent. "The Japanese Bridge" is an exploration of greens and blues, in a restrained color palette of deep spring or early summer.
