Water Lilies

by Claude Monet

Love it or Your Money Back

Water Lilies - Description

Claude Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, and soon began planning a garden. Monet was fond of gardens and flowers, claiming he became a painter due to his love of flowers. Monet placed a large lily pond in the center of his garden at Giverney, and it quickly became an endless source of inspiration for the painter. He would paint this pond from multiple aspects throughout his career. All in all, he would paint over 250 paintings in this series. These are large paintings, stretching across entire walls. Monet wanted his viewers to feel the deep satisfaction and peace he felt in his gardens with these large, soft paintings. Many museum exhibitions of the series place the paintings side by side, with large, long benches places close to them, so viewers can get lost in the color, and feel as through they were actually there in the garden. The water is painted in deep blue, vertical strokes, shot through with green. It's difficult to tell if we are looking at a deep pool of water or a reflection of the sky, until we look closely at the lily pads and the bright flowers that point upward. These are quiet, contemplative paintings, full of peace and solace, and showing Monet's deep love of his garden and nature.
